March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day, established by the United Nations on November 10, 2011.
March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day. According to statistics, one in 600-800 newborns in the world is born with Down syndrome. A child with this disease can be born to anyone. It is neither hereditary nor contagious. The syndrome occurs with equal frequency in girls and boys.
Down syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person has 47 chromosomes instead of 46 chromosomes in all cells. This is its natural state, therefore, Down syndrome is not a disease.
The day and month were not chosen by chance, the 21st chromosome marks the date, and March, as the third month of the year, the trisomy event.
Why is this day associated with a colorful sock?!
The sock looks like a chromosome, colorful socks have brought information about Down syndrome, trisomy of the 21st chromosome pair, to more than one person around the world.

On this day, various events are held in many countries of the world to raise awareness about Down syndrome, including Georgia.
This day is also celebrated in Georgia on March 21, the goal of the event is to protect the dignity and rights of people with Down syndrome and ensure their well-being.
